Have you ever wished there was a concussion book that just told you what you could do to heal? A concussion book that was actually written for concussion patients? One that was easy to read? One that didn’t have tons of scientific language? One that let you pick and choose what was or wasn’t important for you to read? Maybe even a concussion book written by someone who has recovered from Post-concussion Syndrome and can truly relate?
I wished for that concussion book. But I never found it; so I wrote it. It took me a long time because I had Post-concussion Syndrome. But maybe that’s a good thing. You see, I started out writing yet another concussion book on how to cope with PCS. Coping is code for accepting a problem and adapting to it. After about 8 years of suffering with PCS, I thought I knew something about how to adapt and I did. However, one of the ways I “adapted” was to never lose hope, to always keep trying to learn and improve my situation. I never accepted that I was stuck with a problem that had no solution.
As hard as it was to read, I read every concussion book I could find searching for answers. As hard as it was to pay attention, I went to seminars. I took notes and recorded those seminars. I went over and over the information, I took more notes, made diagrams and reread seminar packets until I not just understood, but understood what I needed to do. Most everything I did made me a little healthier. My head started to clear. I was getting more energy. That allowed me to research more and write more. In research, one idea leads to the next and that idea leads to an action and that action leads to more healing.
My first entry for Wear a Hat is dated 8/12/2011. I finished writing in October 2023. That’s 12 years of writing, researching, applying my research to myself and patients and healing. The 2011 book starts with the idea of you learning from my mistakes. My mistakes are still in the book; a lot of mistakes for you to benefit from. But now you can also benefit from my success. I started the book with the title Wear a Hat, now it has the subtitle, The Concussion Recovery Lifestyle. Wearing a hat is an adaptation, having a lifestyle that leads to healing is a solution. I didn’t start to recover until 10 years in. It’s never too late.
Now you don’t have to do the research, go to the seminars, try, fail and try again. I wrote this book to save you the 12 years of life it took me to get to where I am today. You can avoid the mistakes and go straight to the successes. I spent over $30,000 on therapies I wasn’t ready for. My lifestyle did not support the changes those therapies could have made. Success came when I changed my lifestyle. I changed the dynamics of my brain so it was ready to heal.
We are all different. Not everything in the book will apply to you, but it allows for the uniqueness of each person and each person’s injury. You read what applies to you. You skip the rest. I truly hope that through this book, I can shorten your post-concussion syndrome recovery journey and help you live the life you deserve.
